Workplace mediation is usually about restoring and maintaining relationships at work but can include employment disputes that lead to breakdown and parting. However as disputes are a major edge of learning, more productive solutions often emerge from mediation within the workplace as the participants make choices to approach things differently. Outcomes can be very varied but mostly mediation deals with changing misunderstandings and resentments into communication, comprehension and acceptance so parties can work better together. An improved working relationship serves not only the parties but other colleagues and employers too.

The structure of workplace mediation will change with the needs of the parties but it begins by the mediator having a one to one meeting with each party confidentially before bringing them together to clarify the issues, discuss and explore each one, problem solve and create a working list of what they choose to change. Meetings can be all on line or in person depending on Covid19. There is usually a follow up meeting/telephone discussions to check how the outcome is working. A structure that allows both face to face with some conflict coaching for both parties is very successful.
